How to Choose the Right Bikini for Your Body — An Honest Guide

Most bikini buying guides still operate on a system of body types invented in the 1980s. They tell you to ‘balance’ your proportions, to ‘minimise’ certain areas, to ‘elongate’ your torso. They turn the experience of buying swimwear into a correction exercise.

We don’t think that way. Here’s our actual guide to finding a bikini that makes you feel like yourself.

Start With How You Want to Feel

Before silhouette or colour, ask: what do you actually want from this swimwear? Some people want maximum comfort for long beach days. Others want something that photographs well. Some want a statement piece; others want to disappear into the water and not think about what they’re wearing at all.

Your answer shapes everything else. There is no ‘best bikini’ — only the best bikini for you, for this trip, in this season.

The Cut Guide (Without the Body-Shaming)

Triangle Tops

The most versatile bikini top ever designed. Works across cup sizes depending on the string tension and fabric. If you want adjustability and a clean aesthetic, start here.

Balconette and Bandeau

Wider coverage, more structure. A good choice if you want support without underwire, or a more ’70s-inspired silhouette. Works beautifully at any size.

High-Waist Bottoms

Not just for covering — though they cover well. High-waist bikini bottoms provide a strong visual line, look incredible with a crop top or unbuttoned shirt, and are genuinely comfortable for active beach days.

Low-Rise and Hip-Set

The Mediterranean classic. Sits at or below the hip bone, creates a long-looking torso, and photographs well in direct sunlight. Pair with a triangle or balconette top.

Fabric Matters More Than You Think

Cheap swimwear goes see-through when wet, loses its shape after two swims, and pills within a season. A quality bikini fabric — a nylon-elastane blend, ideally with UV and chlorine resistance — holds its colour, dries fast, and stays opaque in the water.

At Kaluca, every piece is made in fabrics we’d actually swim in. The Sun Ritual SS26 collection uses a premium Italian nylon blend that moves with the body, retains colour across a full season, and — crucially — doesn’t look cheap.

Sizing: Always Size Up If in Doubt

Swimwear runs small — especially bottoms. If you’re between sizes, go up. A slightly larger bottom that sits correctly is far more comfortable and flattering than a smaller one that digs in.
